Welcome to my website

Hello there, my name is Bethan and I have made this website for my homework project.

This is a science project to explore some of the scientist who might have put the Great in Great Britain.

I have decided to find out more about a scientist who invented the internet.

I know nothing about him yet but I will use the internet to find out more about him and put my report on this website.

The first computers

I have found out so far that when the first computers were invented in the 1950s scientists staright away started to try to connect them together.

This was the start of the idea of the internet.

It was a man called Tim Berners-Lee about 30 years later who made a way for this to work for everyone.

The internet today is made up of computers all over the world which are connected together because of him.

If it wasn't for him I wouldn't be able to watch my favourite music videos on You Tube, play online games or make websites like this one for homework projects!

Who is Tim Berners-Lee?

Tim Berners-Lee was born in 1955 in London.

His parents worked on the first computer that people could buy and he liked model railways and this taught him about electronics.

After he went to university in Oxford he started working making computer software.

Software is things like computer programmes like Microsoft Word and Powerpoint and Windows as well.

This taught him lots about how computers worked and gave him lots of ideas.

What did he invent?

While he was working in Switzerland, Tim Berners-Lee had the idea of linking all the computers in the world together, and he thought that he could use hyperlinks to create a way to link computers together.

He put these together and created the first internet called Enquire.

It worked well and he then came up with the name the World Wide Web. This is why we say www. before every website.

He also made the first ever internet explorer to look at the internet with.

The first ever website is http://info.cern.ch/

I think it is absolutely rubbish and boring!

What happened to Tim Berners-Lee after his invention?

Because of his invention Tim Berners-Lee is really really famous but he is still working as a scientist.

The Queen knighted him for his work so he is now Sir Tim Berners-Lee and he got invited to the 2012 Olympics opening ceremony in London where they called him Inventor of the World Wide Web in front of 80,000 people.

He has been given lots of awards for his invention.

I think Tim Berners-Lee is really clever and he has changed the world.

I cannot imagine what it would be like to live in a world without the internet.
